Kim Nam-joon (Korean: 김남준; born September 12, 1994), known professionally as RM (formerly Rap Monster), is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and record producer.
As the leader of BTS, RM has been instrumental in shaping the group’s musical direction and is recognized for his lyrical prowess, deep voice, and intellectual approach to songwriting.
RM’s journey into music began at a young age when he developed an interest in hip-hop and started writing his own lyrics. His talent quickly caught the attention of Big Hit Entertainment, where he became the first member recruited for BTS. As the group’s leader, RM has played a pivotal role not only in the music production process but also in mediating between the members and guiding the group through their artistic and personal growth.
In addition to his work with BTS, RM has pursued solo projects that highlight his versatility and introspective nature as an artist. In 2015, he released his first solo mixtape, RM, which featured a raw and unfiltered exploration of his identity and experiences. The mixtape was well-received for its honest lyricism and diverse range of musical styles, solidifying RM’s reputation as a formidable rapper and songwriter.
In 2018, RM followed up with his second mixtape, Mono, which he described as a “playlist” rather than a traditional mixtape. Mono delves deeper into RM’s introspective side, with themes of solitude, melancholy, and self-reflection. The mixtape was praised for its cohesive sound and emotional depth, earning critical acclaim and resonating with listeners worldwide.
Beyond his solo work, RM has also collaborated with various artists across different genres, further showcasing his ability to transcend musical boundaries. As a producer and lyricist, he has contributed significantly to BTS’s discography, often addressing themes of youth, mental health, and social issues. RM’s leadership and creative vision have been key factors in BTS’s rise to global stardom, making him one of the most influential figures in contemporary music.
